Suburban Winner has Ties to Knockgriffin
6/29/2008
Frost Giant, winner of Belmont Park’s $400,000 Suburban Handicap (GI) on June 28th, is the first foal out of the mare TAKESMYBREATHAWAY, a graduate of Jim FitzGerald’s sales agency FitzGerald/Keogh.
The 10-year-old Gone West mare is a half-sister to top sire Mutakddim and realized a $420,000 bid from the Manganaros’ J.M.J. Stables Corporation during the 2001 Keeneland November Sale.
Frost Giant battled the length of the stretch and outlasted Solar Flare (Arg) to win the Suburban by a half-length, collecting his initial Grade I mark. The five-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway is owned in part by 2008 Kentucky Derby winning connections IEAH Stables and is trained by Richard Dutrow Jr. He also has a pair of Group III wins in Ireland to his credit.

Knockgriffin Farm clients enjoyed a stellar beginning to 2008, as no less than three yearlings foaled and raised on the Paris farm topped their respective sessions at the Keeneland January sale.
The top yearling filly for Tuesday’s session was the Smart Strike lass out of Tash Dash (Hip 463). Her $300,000 bid from B.W.J. Bloodstock held well enough to be the co-third highest price for all yearlings in the seven-day sale.
Thursday’s segment had only two yearlings bring six figures, with the Knockgriffin-based colt Tapit—Ryvnine (Hip 1171) leading the way with a $145,000 bid from Stepping Stone Bloodstock.
The penultimate session on Saturday featured a Knockgriffin Farm youngster by Saint Liam out of Golf Girl (Hip 2118). Renowned bloodstock agent Mike Ryan went to $220,000 to secure the colt, easily the top price for the day. Ryan also had signed the ticket for the colt’s ill-fated sire and was quite satisfied to land this one from Saint Liam’s only crop.
